Lego Team Builder
from Shared Learnings and Ideas

Too literal to have a team builder where the team actually builds something? Of course not!

This is a great team builder because each team member is needed to make it work, so no one gets left out. It’s flexible enough for any environment, be it a work team builder or game night with friends. It’s even kid friendly for a child’s birthday party!

The idea is for each team to compete at building a Lego structure that meet’s all of their customer’s requirements. Think customer service meets manufacturing meets speed.

Who is it for?

Total Group Size: 10 – 100 people

Team Sizes: 3 – 10 people

What materials are needed?

  • At least 4 Legos/person or 20 Legos/team, whichever is higher. Duplo are recommended as they are easier to work with, but any kind of building set will work.

  • 1 bag or container/team for holding the slips of requirements (coffee mugs work well :) )

  • Cut up slips of customer requirements

Prep work?

  • Print a set of customer requirements for each team. Cut up the list of customer requirements into slips, removing any that can’t be done given the building materials you have. Place each cut up set in an opaque container (ex. Coffee mug, cloth sack, etc.).

  • Place a pile of Lego’s in a central location of the space where the game will be played.

  • That’s it! So simple!

Time to Play!

Divide the group into teams of at least 3 people each. Have each team member pick a customer requirement slip from their team’s container. Make sure each team can access the Lego pile while still having a spot to build their structure.

Goal: Each team should build a connected Lego structure that meets all of the customer’s requirements.

Catch: Team members cannot share their customer’s requirement with the team. Team members might figure it out based on their input into the build, but they cannot show or say what it is.

Winner: The first team to build a structure that meets all of the requirements OR the team that meets the most requirements after 20 minutes.

Because things don’t always go as planned:

If a team says they are finished but didn’t meet one of the customer’s requirements, then 2 team members can pick 1 additional customer requirement each and resume competition.

If a team member accidentally shares their customer’s requirement, then they can pick 2 additional customer requirements and resume play.

Variations:

  • For round 2, have team member’s pick 2 customer requirements each.
